Choosing the Right Kart & Engine
Kart Buying FAQ
Should I start with Briggs LO206 or Rotax?
Many new drivers start in Briggs LO206 because it teaches racecraft fundamentals — braking, corner entry,
momentum and clean overtaking. It’s reliable, cost-effective and has strong competition in Canada.
Rotax offers more speed and tuning depth, with higher grip, more power and data-driven improvements. Some drivers remain in
Briggs long-term, while others transition to Rotax as they seek more speed and technical challenge.
Our recommendation: Start in Briggs unless you already have strong karting experience or racing background.
It builds skills that transfer to every category — including Rotax, shifter and cars.
Which 2-stroke engine program should I race?
Each engine program has strengths and regional popularity. At Prime, most of our drivers race Rotax because:
- Strong Canadian and international support through the Rotax Max Challenge.
- Lower running costs compared to some other TaG engine platforms.
- Excellent racing quality — close grids, parity and consistent competition.
- Opportunity to qualify for the Rotax Grand Finals, considered one of the pinnacles of karting.
In short: run the engine platform that has strong participation in your region, but if you’re chasing performance and long-term development — Rotax is an excellent path.
Is Birel ART or OTK Red Speed better?
Both are championship-winning chassis at every level — from club racing to world competition.
Birel ART tends to offer:- A forgiving setup window and predictable balance.
- Strong performance on medium-grip circuits.
- Excellent results in Briggs LO206 and Rotax categories.
- A sharp front-end response with strong mid-corner rotation.
- Massive aftermarket support and tuning ecosystem.
- Outstanding performance in Rotax, OK-style and TaG categories.
The best choice depends on your class, driving style and track grip. Many competitive drivers test both — and we’re happy to guide you to the best match.
